Book Review: The Painted Table {LitFuse Blog Tour & Giveaway}

About the book: A beautiful heirloom ingrained with family memory has become a totem of a life Saffee would rather forget---a childhood disrupted by her mother's mental illness.

Saffee does not want the table. By the time she inherits the object of her mother's obsession, the surface is thick with haphazard layers of paint, and heavy with unsettling memories.

After a childhood spent watching her mother slide steadily into insanity, painting and re-painting the ancient table, Saffee has come to fear that seeds of psychosis may lie dormant within her. But as an adult with a family of her own, Saffee must confront her mother's torment if she wants to defend herself against it.

Traversing four generations over the course of a century, The Painted Table is an epic portrait of inherited memory, proclivity, and guilt. It is a sprawling narrative affirmation that a family artifact---like a family member---can bear the marks of one's entire past . . . as well as intimations of one's redemption.

Purchase your copy: http://ow.ly/rIosh

About the author: Suzanne Field, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, has taught English as a Second Language in China, Ukraine, and Hawaii. She has also been a magazine editor and home-school teacher. She and her husband have five children and divide their time between Kansas and Hawaii where she is a tutor and mentor.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book. I was doubtful when I began the book, however. When I started it, it was a little difficult to follow and to get into. I don't really even know when but at some point I was hooked! The style of the book is a little disjointed {at least it felt that way to me}, but I think that it goes along well with the subject. As the book went on, I came to expect it and it felt right.

It begins with a fire, flashbacks to Joann's mother's death, and the table that is there through it all. The table is Joann's refuge through her childhood but it holds so many painful memories for her. Her mother's mental illness, meant to be a secret from her, haunts Joann through her life. Through it all, Saffee is a witness. As she gets older she comes to realize the magnitude all the while worrying that the fate of her mother -and her grandmother- will be hers as well. Through both Joann and, eventually, Saffee's life, they look to God. For whatever reason, Joann cannot find the relief she needs, while Saffee comes closer.

This book was a bit different than I expected but I am very glad to have read it. It shows, I think, an accurate portrayal of some families that live with mental illness. The characters were well defined and each came to be cared for as I read {with possibly the exception of April- she has such a different personality that I am sure stemmed from the way she was expected to be by her family and the way they treated her because of that}. I would recommend this book to others who are willing to open their hearts and minds to this part of life. Many people do not see this and choose to ignore it if they do.

Review & Giveaway: Printcopia Canvas Print {8x10}

Have you ever considered having a photo to canvas made? Are you worried that it won't turn out as lovely as the photo?

Or maybe the real trouble is choosing a photo.

I have often seen canvas photo prints and have always loved them. Well, I was given the opportunity to review Printcopia's service to make one of my very own! The toughest part was indeed choosing the print. While at Printcopia's site, it didn't really help me decide which photo to have turned into a canvas print, it did make the whole process extremely easy and enjoyable.

I won't get into too much about the website itself because it is very self explanatory (imho) but will tell you about the canvas print I received.

On a wall just the perfect size.
I was offered an 8x10 canvas and that is part of the reason I had difficulty deciding the image to use. In the end I went with a photograph I had taken of the lambs ear in my backyard. It has been edited with a photo editing program and a verse added.

The quality of my original photograph was not the highest; good but it could have been better. It had been edited down to a smaller size at some point along its journey. You cannot tell that on the canvas print. The print is clear and crisp. All the editing I had done on the image shows up wonderfully on this print. {And the typo is completely and totally my own doing. ahem}

I chose the mirror wrap at 3/4".

It is beautiful. I love it.

The frame is sturdy and the canvas is not too tight nor loose on the frame. It comes with a standard wall hanger but you do have the option of a canvas stand for an additional cost.

The retail value of my canvas print is $56.78 {at the time of my posting it is being offered for $42.58!}. Shipping took 3 days after it was printed. The order was placed July 4, 2013, and this lovely wall addition arrived July 18, 2013! I think that is a good production/shipping time-frame. It did come in a box that was not adequate for its size; the box was huge. The canvas print however was secure inside.

So how do you like my canvas? Do you have a photo that you would like to have turned into a canvas print? Head over to Printcopia and get started! They have a lot of size options.

Or...here's your chance to win an 8x10 canvas print of your own!
Each entrant will also receive a 60% off coupon to use at Princopia.
***Disclaimer: I received the above reviewed item, for free, for the purpose of this review from Printcopia. No compensation was given for this post. All opinions are my own. See Disclosure/Policies.***

In June I wrote a review of the Alpha-Phonics reading program. It's a very simple and easy to use program that (almost) painlessly helps to teach students to read. It's not just for the very young though. It can be used in a variety of situations. While I was working on my review, I thought of how it could be used in a tutoring scenario. Your situation may be different.

Copperhead, Civil War Movie- June 28, 2013

In high school and shortly after, the Civil War was 'the' point in history for me. I immersed myself into reading about it. Honestly, I've not really spent much time in that era for quite a few years. My dd however is coming up on it in her school studies and what perfect timing; the new movie Copperhead is coming out soon! I am looking forward to its release.
The movie is based on the book of the same name, written in 1893 (?) by Harold Frederic. Harold was just a young boy (perhaps a teen) when the Civil War ripped the US apart but he put down his memories in the book, The Copperhead.
copperhead-book-coverFrom my reading (so far it’s been just more than a glance), this book does not take the same stance as the many popular books of the time, and not the same angle as many movies. It shows a man, Abner Beech, who was an anti-abolitionist, standing against his entire town. Even members of his own family.
This Civil War-era movie is about standing up for your beliefs. It focuses on home and not the battlefield. Now, I’m sure that this movie will inspire many people. I just hope it does it in the right way. I hope I am going to appreciate seeing ‘how the other half lived’- or rather a few because Abner Beech, being in New York, may have been very much in the minority with his anti-abolitionist stance.
“Abner despises slavery – but just as passionately opposes the war that is waging in the name of “union” hundreds of miles away because he believes the Constitution of the United States is being trampled. Abner is neither a Yankee nor a Rebel. He is what is known as a Copperhead.” from the press release
There are many times when we feel strongly, as others do, about an issue, but when we don’t take either side. I’m looking forward to seeing how this movie presents that. The movie comes out June 28, 2013, and I am happy to say I will be able to see it.
Would you like to receive the book and a ticket to see the movie when it releases, too?
I have the opportunity to offer a giveaway of the book and a ticket to see the movie when it releases. This is open to US residents only, no PO box addresses. The giveaway ends June 20, 2013, and the winner will be notified and announced within 48 hours. The winner must reply within 24 hours, or an alternative winner will be chosen. Follow the Rafflecopter below to enter the giveaway.

Giveaway! Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is so versatile. I should know- I used it for just about everything that I cooked with lately. What did I use this for? Here we go...
  • Biscuits
  • Pancakes
  • Waffles
  • Pizza crust
  • Gravy
  • Turkey (for Thanksgiving)
  • Chicken (on the stove)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Better Butter (mixed butter and oil) –which then was used for whatever butter is used for
  • Tortillas (yep, I make my own)
I’m sure there is more I’m forgetting. When I say I used it for just about everything…if it called for butter or oil, in went the coconut oil.
Tropical Traditions was gracious and sent me a quart of their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil to try and also are allowing me to offer the same for a giveaway. See below for more information. This is open to both US and Canada.

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 32 oz.Win 1 quart of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil!
Tropical Traditions is America’s source for coconut oil. Their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is hand crafted in small batches by family producers, and it is the highest quality coconut oil they offer. Tropical Traditions also carries other varieties of affordable high quality coconut oil. Visit their website to check on current sales, to learn about the many uses of coconut oil, and to read about all the advantages of buying coconut oil online. By the Light of the Silvery Moon- LitFuse Blog Tour & A Giveaway!

Follow the blog tour by visiting this link: http://litfusegroup.com/blogtours/text/13465890/triciagoyertitanic

SilveryMooncoverAbout the book:

Amelia Gladstone's hopes are tied up in the Titanic--hopes for a reunion with her sister and an introduction to an admirer. But when she offers a spare ticket to a down-and-out young man, her fate is about to change. Quentin Walpole is stunned when a sweet lady secures his passage to America--and even more surprised to find his wealthy father and older brother on board the ship. Suddenly Amelia finds herself caught between the attentions of two men, but who should she entrust her heart to? As the fateful night arrives, will Amelia lose everything to the icy waters?

Watch the trailer for the book below.

TG12012sm

About the author:

Tricia Goyer is the award winning author of thirty-two books including Beside Still Waters, Remembering You, and the mommy memoir, Blue Like Play Dough. Tricia is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences and is the host of Living Inspired. She and her family make their home in Little Rock, Arkansas where they are part of the ministry of FamilyLife.

More info: Living Inspired (http://toginet.com/shows/livinginspired) and www.triciagoyer.com.

You can purchase the book from your choice of book retailer. It retails for $12.99, is 320 pages in length and a paperback.

My Thoughts:

I was excited when I was chosen to review this book. I love historical fiction and really enjoyed Goyer’s Chasing Mona Lisa. In terms of historical fiction, it is great. The descriptions are well done (I’m sure I got ‘lost’ on the Titanic while reading *wink*). The only thing I really did not like were the wishy-washy attitudes of the characters in (just a few) spots. It doesn’t happen often, thank goodness, but I found myself rolling my eyes when I came to those parts. But then again, that’s a good writer when they can get you engaged with the characters Winking smile.

I appreciated the way Amelia could see the difference in status from 2nd class to 1st class. I would love to have read her going to 3rd class- those scenes could have been quite wonderful. Goyer places real people on the Titanic with Amelia- people who were truly there. I believe she captures the atmosphere of excitement that those aboard, and those seeing the travelers off, quite well.

I do not like romance books- the less the better. This one has just a tinge of romance, it’s more of a love story than a romance. I enjoyed that the focus was not on the ‘romance’ of the characters rather it was a part of the whole. It was very tastefully done. Cannot wait to read more of Goyer’s books!

I received this book free from LitFuse in exchange for an honest review and participation in the blog tour. No compensation was given. All opinions are my own. See Disclosure/Policies.

A Birthday & 100 Followers Giveaway

Okay, so my birthday was almost 2 weeks ago …and I reached 100 followers about a week before that. I had to come up with something to give away!
If you like little note cards, for just saying hello to a friend or for a quick thank you, thinking of you, then these would be perfect for that. The giveaway is for 3 sets of handmade mini notecards with envelopes. Each was made by me from beautiful high quality paper. I designed, measured and cut out by hand all of these cute cards and envelopes.
stripes2
You see- I love scrapbook paper…but I don’t scrapbook. Instead I find great combinations and make small paper creations. One of my problems with making these however, is that I just can’t bring myself to use them! I’ve made quite a few and find it so much easier to give away than to use for their intended purpose. That is why I am offering them as a giveaway.
stripes inside
The giveaway is for all 3 sets.
stripes
Each set has 4 notecards and 4 envelopes.
velvet stripes inside
The measurements of these cards and envelopes are:
The cards measure 3.25 inches by just under 2.75 inches when folded; open measures just under 5.25 inches by 3.25 inches. The envelopes measure 3.75 inches by just over 2.75 inches.

velvet stripes
Two of the sets come in a neat little box (that I also designed and cut out by hand- I’m sure there are templates and nifty cutters- but nooo I have to do things the hard way) and the third set is wrapped with a strip of paper. The box measures 4.25 inches by 3 inches by .75 inches.

Interested? These could come in handy as a quick little note to someone or a gift even!
So here’s how to enter the giveaway (please leave email address so I can contact the winner!):
Tell me that you would be interested in winning these and you’re entered!
For additional entries (please leave a separate comment for each entry):

  • Sign up for email notifications (located right under GFC), let me know if you already do!
