A house with rooms that are bare of our personalities. What would that be like? Would it feel welcoming and comfortable? Most people would not think so. A home most often has spaces that we have made our own.
We add ourselves to the walls and shelves. The paint can be a simple white, or any other non-descript color, but what we put on the walls imparts some of us.
Our house is fairly large and makes it possible for each member of the family to have their own space. My favorite space is most likely in the classroom, in front of the big window that looks out over our backyard. The tree out the window is most likely a maple and it is large. The shade from it is wonderful. I love watching the birds that alight on the branches as well as the squirrels that scamper up the trunk.
The backyard is one of dh’s favorite spots. After dinner, when it has begun to cool off, he sits in this chair and waits for deer to visit. His bbq grill is also there because he is the professional griller in our house. When he is not outside he is most often in the garage. He has not quite got it all laid out as he would like it but there’s plenty of time.
Lee spends quite a bit of time in her bedroom. She loves to draw and read. Her collection of dolls have been arranged just so on her dresser and shelf. One of those little figurines on the shelf she even purchased herself recently.
She is a very organized person and appreciates ‘things in their place’. Her books are ordered in a particular way that I am not entirely sure I recall! One shelf I believe is for non-fiction and the other for fiction. From there they are sorted even further.
Fox is not as organized as his sister; perhaps he takes a bit more after me. Some day he would like to decorate his room in an army theme. For now, his special touch will have to do. I did have to crop this picture because honestly, I would be a bit embarrassed to show what the rest of his room looks like. Think of a town after a tornado has gone through, then apply that to a bedroom. That is probably accurate.
And then there is the kitty. She pretty much makes it all her own. She does have two spots in particular that are hers. One is in the classroom; the colorful blankets –and apparently my gloves. The other is down in the basement, where it is cooler. For some strange reason she does not like to sleep in the cat bed without the blanket. Sometimes she even sleeps on the blanket outside of the cat bed.
What is your favorite space in your house?
