Adventures in Operating Systems

Windows. Mac. Linux. Yeah, that's about all I know for operating systems. I actually learned to use a computer with a Mac {loved it, too -I still dream of owning a Mac}. Then in high school it was all Windows, so I got used to that. In college, Windows again. Now I've no idea how to use Mac and only recently {thanks to my mom} know about Linux. I did find a long list of operating systems and was/am quite surprised there are so many. I have no idea how many are currently in use.

Please feel free to correct me on the many mistakes I'm sure I'm going to make in this post.

Recently I was introduced to Kubuntu, which is a Linux based system {or is it the other way around...?}. I'd heard of Ubuntu {from my mom- she's more tech savvy than I -at least with computers} and was contemplating checking it out. I was told by a reliable source {a teen at my church whose relative helped create Kubuntu -don't quote me there} that I'd like Kubuntu better than Ubuntu. {Feel tongue tied yet? It's just me, isn't it?}

Why would I like it better? From what I understand, it wouldn't be such a change from Windows for me. I don't mind an adventure, but for my computer, I want smooth and easy more. As time has gone on, I use my computer less and less. I use it basically for this {writing on my blog}, keeping records {documents generally} and to store and share photographs. Oh, yes, and of course, internet. But for the internet, it doesn't matter what OS I use, rather the browser. {And that's a topic for another day!}

Today I purchased two 16GB flash drives {and just what I ask is the difference between a thumb drive and a flash drive?} to transfer files and what-nots to so that I can start my computer new. Fresh new start with a new OS.

My mom asked why I was going to be switching and at first I mentioned slow computer speeds, and freezing up when using some programs and internet. But the more I think about it, I just want something different. I am annoyed with the slow-down in performance of my laptop. Since I can't buy a new laptop, I figured I'd get as new-to-me as I could!

I am finishing up my download of Kubuntu to my USB stick {that's a flash drive, or thumb drive...right?} and then I'll install it on my computer. I'm sure it won't explode...but I certainly hope it doesn't cause any problems!

Here's to an adventure!

  1. I want a new laptop that has Ubuntu already installed. It is sold by Newegg and is $245... I wish I could!

  2. I'm a huge Linux fan. I've been using it as my main OS for a year and a half now and tried out a few different versions of it.
    I started with Ubuntu and really enjoyed using that. It's very user friendly. I didn't try Kubuntu because my laptop only has 2 GB of RAM and I wanted something that didn't use a lot of memory for when I do a lot of photo and video editing. So I looked at Bodhi Linux and it's been my fav for the past year. I still use a lot of the software made for KDE it just works so well! One of the great things about Linux is that there are many versions to suit what different people like and need. :) All the browsers I know of have linux version except MS Internet Explorer. lol
    Flash drives and thumb drives are the same thing.
    How did your install go?

    1. The install went fine. But it runs side by side with Windows and if I don't select it in time, Kubuntu isn't the default OS. I'll have to figure out what to do about that.
      I'm going to look up Bodhi Linux; never heard of it. I want something that doesn't use a lot of my computer's resources but still lets me do what I want. I really don't want/need much else.
      Oh, and I dislike Internet Explorer so if I can get by without it, I'm totally completely fine with that!
      Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. :)

    2. The little text program that you see is called the Grub boot loader. I did a search and found this. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10340183#post10340183
      It's a program you can install that will let you change the boot order.
