Movies Lately

We own many DVDs and almost as many VHSs. They certainly do not make ‘em like they used to! But sometimes that is good …and not so good.

Nanny2

Thursday night we watched Nanny McPhee Returns

Friday night we watched Nanny McPhee and Gnomeo and Juliet. And Nanny McPhee Returns…again.

Remember That Darn Cat (from 1965, that is)? Or how about The Goonies? How many have seen Harvey?

Anyway, watching movies (it almost seemed a marathon for us once-a-week-movie-watchers- 3 movies in a row! wow) these past two days got me thinking ‘movies’. Contrary to a what a few of my family members think (*wink*) I do enjoy watching movies. It just seems that the humor in movies nowadays is different than my humor. Mine is quite dry and sometimes it seems out of place. Oh well, that’s who I am. I actually liked Gnomeo and Juliet! There were a few references that I had heard about before watching…but they weren’t as bad as they were made out to be, or well, less than I expected.

Nanny McPhee was good as well…the second one, eh, not so much.

What makes the older movies so much funnier than so many of the ones nowadays? Well, I actually don’t think they were funnier…but the ones nowadays have to try so hard. There are computer graphics to enhance, they have to move fast (no slow spots or people lose attention), and they have to relate to what is happening now. Other than the relating to the audience at the time, older movies were all about ‘real’ scenes and slow spots, sure they may have been annoying then too but in our day things have to move fast.

I just like the older movies how they gave the impression of something happening but didn’t have to actually show it. And the movies were more, more… well, gosh, I don’t know what the word is! We had to still use our imagination. Perhaps it is because just about anything goes nowadays.

Someday I am going to make a long list of movies that I have loved and that I want to see. I had started one when I first got married- movies we wanted to buy. Now the kids will randomly say a movie is so good that we just have to buy it. But really, we don’t usually buy movies. Haven’t for quite a while. Some of the latest movies that we feel are worth buying are Tangled, How to Train Your Dragon, and MegaMind.

I know those are all animated films. How about movies? Perhaps The Sorcerer’s Apprentice…?

Okay, so some wouldn’t approve of letting their kids watch The Goonies or Back to the Future, but those are the movies I grew up watching. I didn’t watch That Darn Cat or Harvey until I met my husband. We have a varied collection of movies at our house…and it’s a good thing. I am waiting for a really really good movie to come out.

  1. We enjoyed "How To Train Your Dragon" too! (just watched it last night). Have you seen "What's Up Doc?". I think, based on the movies that you like, that you would enjoy it. Also, "Arsenic and Old Lace".

  2. I Love old movies!! Bing Crosby and Bob Hope together is hilarious! Doris Day is one of my favorites.. Her and Rock Hudson together are good movies. I like the Herbie movies and That Darn Cat. We watch the new ones sometimes. Tangled was pretty good. I cancelled our Netflix because it took 2 months of Tangled being at the top to actually get it. Plus we werent watching them much because so much was going on. WE also watch Star wars and Narnia is a fave too. We dont buy many either because its usually watch once and thats it. Library is free!lol
Movies today tend to be a little ridiculous and the humor even in kids movies sometimes tends toward a type of sexual humor and not everyone thinks that funny ya know and when your kid doesnt understand it anyway I think there is no reason to have it in there.
