Is it just me? Is my right side bar missing? No, it's not just me...IT IS MISSING! *update* it is not missing but it is at the bottom of the left side bar...but why??? *update on my update* It only is weird looking when I use firefox... lol
But onto other things: Today was our first unofficial 'official' school day of the year. In another post I told why, in a round-a-bout way, why we didn't start when we were planning. I cannot remember the format I used before so I'm winging it!
What We Accomplished Today 07/07/2010 (woohoo, I'm glad to be posting it again!)
Bible: Reviewed timeline of happenings in Genesis. It has the 'major' players in the book. Got it from Padfields. Then they worked on the Bible Firsts (pg. 44) crossword. It was a bit tough for Fox but I am thinking it is because he has had some time off from 'thinking'... I had intended on doing the review and starting into Exodus but the crossword took a bit more time than planned so we will move into Exodus tomorrow. For that I chose the Bible Class Book on Exodus (also from Padfields). They each chose their verse for the week and did it as copy work. Fox chose Psalm 1:1-3 (but shortened it to 1:1 when he saw how 'long' it was). Lee chose Isaiah 59:1, 2.
Math: Fox did chapters 27 & 28 in LoFF; Lee did chapters 20-23 in LoFD&P. Fox really was struggling today! I think he was trying too hard. He found the answer to the problems but was thinking he needed to continue, there was more to the problem. I am sure tomorrow will be better. Although he was struggling, he definitely tried to keep a somewhat positive attitude. Lee is wanting to get farther ahead in math because she has a friend that is younger than she is and in a higher math. We can tell our kids that they are okay where they are, they are not falling behind when they are on grade level, but when a close friend (that is younger, no less) is farther ahead...well, my words fell on deaf ears. I don't want to discourage her either so I am encouraging her to apply herself more.
Fox:
CBoM: Panama Canal- finished the chapter. He found it on the globe. It's amazing how things are put into perspective by a globe. The earth is huge but at the same time, we are all so close! Okay, that's the thought I had when we were looking at the globe! He filled in his notebook page for the Panama Canal. He sure loves to hear the adventures of Richard Halliburton. It took Halliburton eight days to swim the canal... and he still had energy to scale a 600 foot high hill. What a man!
TCoO: Adams-The Tariff of Abominations. He did excellent with his narrations on this! He read it out loud and then narrated on his own; chose his own stopping place to narrate. We were talking about the Monroe Doctrine (didn't really focus too much on it) so I went searching online for something to show him so he could read it or something about it. Well I didn't find that but did find a Factory and Plantation Rules Compared worksheet. We have great discussions about why the South had slaves and why they felt it necessary. He was so amazed that one of the documents is an actual scan of the original document. I assigned it as 'homework' and he decided that it is to be due by Friday. I love the first day of school :)
OCU: Read pages 28-31 and did great with narrating. He had more trouble with remembering names but he could remember where people were from or what was noteworthy about them :)
Lee:
TBV: Read second third of chapter 6; pages 97-100. Written narration- minimum 3 solid paragraphs. She's a silly one. Read what she said to me about '3 solid paragraphs'. She's a silly one..
WHtPC: This one she did on her own. It was just to review what she had read previously. Chapters 1-3. I didn't require narration, oral or written for this.
Both of them did some reading on their own. They do not seem to like to read from the list that I would like them to. We didn't get to Latin today and I so wanted to! We will do Spanish tomorrow and go with Latin on Friday, even though it is just review of what we'd done before and it's the weekend *lol gives them time to forget the review*. Lee also worked on art today. She found some helpful sites/pics to show different eyes, hair styles. She put them up for others that may find them useful. Fox built with LEGOs. Sometimes I love those things and other times I abhor them! I loved them this time... :)
And we did get the entry forms turned in on time to the 4H extension office. It's funny that before we headed to the office, the kids were grumbling 'next year I don't want to do it; it's dumb; it's too much work; there's not enough information; we don't know what to do' but by the time we left the office they were happier and felt like they could do it and they may do it again next year. I hope so. I think it will be good for them in so many ways.
So that was our first day of school! I'm satisfied with it and looking forward to tomorrow!
Once a catch-all for our homeschool and everyday family life, now a spot for my meanderings about whatever comes to mind- and always books.
