Day 1: Intro {National Poetry Month & 30 Day Blog Challenge}

Cuyahoga Public Library is sending out emails to remind its patrons that this is National Poetry Month. They will include poems to read, poems to write, and books to check out. I thought (again) that it might be kind of fun to participate in this.

On the AO forum someone mentioned a 30 Day Blog Challenge- post every day for a month. I thought it was a good idea to get posts on the blog.

Then I thought, why not combine the two?

I already technically have one post up for April but here's another.

The poem for today is called "Road Kill" by Mary A. Turzillo, and I must say it's... weird. I'm more used to "roses are red, violets are blue" kinds of poetry. Or perhaps the harder to follow idylls of the King by Tennyson {I can't be the only one who finds it hard to follow}.

The poem writing prompt is "Think about opposites: If April Fool's Day was turned into April Sages Day, how would it be celebrated? Write a poem of decrees for the day."

I am not great at writing poems but I'll attempt it some. Fortunately, or rather unfortunately for me, it doesn't tell what kind of poem. {Everyday most likely will not contain poetry.}

Decreed

It is decreed, because it is Sages Day,
To make sure you do not get lost on your way,
Ask which road to take of each person upon whom you may.
Do not give in, no do not let yourself sway
To think that you are sure, but when they say,
"Nay, you are on the wrong road," change your way.

It is decreed, because of the Day of Sages,
That you should also be in search of pages
That were written for all the ages.
It should be a book that really engages
Every person, and it wasn't written by mages.
It would be most useful if it taught how to earn your wages.

It is decreed -I say, that's why-,
That poems should easily untie
In the readers' mind, and be pleasing to the eye.
Some may cause a person to sigh
But only if the poem is truly meant to satisfy.
Poems should not be made to mystify.

It is decreed, -really, this started out swell-
That this Sages Day thing will end unwell.
For there will be many who rebel,
When they on these things really dwell,
Because I made them all up, in a nutshell.
Oh well.

    1. Thanks, Wendy! I'd be super happy if you did...but not the least bit bothered if you don't make it here. And don't worry about reading my poetry- goodness, no! The one today was...uh, well, it was interesting and somewhat fun to do. Looking forward to tomorrow's prompt.
