Taking Time to Learn (Crochet & Watercolor)

As I said I was going to attempt to try to get some mother culture into my life and would attempt to put it down here, I figured why not get started.
It is acknowledging the fact that we Mothers are also people, people with minds and souls and bodies that need wise tending...~Lizzie Smith
Last night I attended for the first time in way too long a small Charlotte Mason (CM) group to watch Simply Charlotte Mason's (SCM) recorded sessions from small conference in 2010, I believe. I do not know exactly what the title of the series is but you can view some of the videos at their website.

Why did I go? Because I am not strong in what I want to accomplish. My homeschooling days are numbered {gasp!} but I do want to continue teaching. And so I went to be refreshed in the ways of CM.

But I also went to learn. Because my life will not stop just because they have graduated.

We all have much to learn in this life, no matter where we are. I learned last night that the school days can (and should) be simple- even in high school. I learned that doing those things that we take to be 'extras' are very important to our sanity. Art switches our brain from being tired or frustrated to relaxed and refreshed. Handicrafts, even if we aren't that great at them, are also important. For the fact that they also affect our brain and body the way art does, but also because they can produce something useful.

My title may make this sound as if it is a how-to; it definitely is not! I need much help in both of these areas. I bought two small balls of yarn today to learn to make crochet dishcloths. I also bought one single paint brush of high quality to learn dry brush painting. I know how to crochet granny squares but would like to branch out to something a bit more. And I know how to somewhat do watercolor...I need to improve and definitely need to actually figure out dry brush.
The beautiful is as useful as the useful. More so, perhaps.
~Bishop Bienvenu, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, p. 31
I was so exhausted at 11:00 pm when I finally pulled into the driveway last night; but it was fully worth my time. Next month I hope to do it again.

Encouraging bits:
Watercolor Woes
Time, Peace, and Creativity
and a creative one- 52 Weeks of Free Dishcloth Patterns

Perhaps I'll even have images to share soon. Perhaps.

  1. Is this your first attempt with crocheting? I love crocheting! I think it's much easier than knitting, less needles. ;) YouTube has some great tutorials

    1. I've made granny square throws before, just big enough for a lap. But it's been quite a few years. Yes! YouTube is my friend in these areas :) Found out I've been doing double crochets wrong all along! :)

  2. I agree with Helena, crocheting is much easier than knitting, although I can do both. My mind is fuzzy, didn't I teach you how to make grannie squares?

    Love you

    1. Yes, Mom, you taught me to do granny squares. You also taught me to knit at one point :) But I've forgotten how to do that. As for the granny squares, I was apparently making up my own 'double crochets'. I had to relearn watching YT videos.
