Current Events: Week of 3/26-3/30

And now…. *drum roll* Current Events!

A pilot flying a JetBlue plane apparently had a mid-flight breakdown. David Gonzalez is being regarded as a hero for successfully restraining the pilot. The pilot suddenly ran from the cockpit to the back of the plane, where the bathroom was. It was occupied, and he tried to get in, messing with the handle. After getting into the bathroom, he ran back out, shouting that the passengers ‘better start praying now’, and saying something about Iraq and Iran. Gonzalez could see that things weren’t right. The pilot tried to get back into the cockpit, but the co-pilot had wisely locked him out. Unable to get in there, the pilot then tried to get to the emergency hatch. But Gonzalez stopped him, by grabbing him in a choke hold and making him lose consciousness. No one is quite sure what went wrong with the pilot, and what he was up to. All we know is, David Gonzalez saved about 130 people on that plane that day. Full story here.

A couple in Florida were injured by lightning. James and Donna Deas were at Toys “R” Us when lightning hit a tree several feet away from them. Luckily, their baby Haley was inside their truck, and not in her stroller, otherwise the lightning would have got the baby. Donna Deas describes the lightning strike like a bomb, and she felt her legs were on fire. The couple were knocked to the ground by the strike; Donna’s legs were paralyzed for half an hour. Florida is known as the lighting capital of the U.S., with around 500 people being injured by lightning each year. Read full story here.

Okay guys! That’s it for this week. See you next week!
