From the website:
We reviewed the first volume of this series, Who Is God?, last year and loved it so we were thinking this second volume would be great as well. We’ve not been disappointed! Our children are bombarded on a daily basis with competing messages. Every song, movie, book, TV show, blog, and game is full of ideas—ideas about truth, morality, beauty, identity, faith, and more. Not all of these ideas are true. Some are wrong, some are deceptive, and some are outright destructive. It is more important than ever that young children be equipped to discern among competing ideas and stand in the truth. This is why Apologia has teamed with Summit Ministries to bring you the "What We Believe" Series. The "What We Believe" Series is an outstanding way to teach your child the essential beliefs of the Christian faith, but it’s so much more! With this student-directed, Bible-based curriculum, your children will learn how to use Scripture as a lens through which to view the world around them—to see everything the way God sees it—and know the truth.
You can see the Table of Contents at the website but I will give you the compact version here:
- Lesson 1: What Are We Doing Here?
- Lesson 2: What Will You Make Today?
- Lesson 3: What’s On Your Mind?
- Lesson 4: Can You Trust Your Feelings?
- Lesson 5: Will You Choose Wisely?
- Lesson 6: How Will You Run the Race?
- Lesson 7: What Kind of Fruit Are You Growing?
- Lesson 8: Who Do You Think You Are?
Each of these lessons have about 15-19 subheadings that deal with various aspects of how God created each of us and how we should view ourselves and others. This book holds the The House of Truth: Biblical Truths # 9-12, continued from the first book. Each of these books are stand-alone books but I’d think that having the entire 4-volume set would be a wonderful addition to a home library.
I’m fairly sure that my son’s favorite part of this is the notebooking journal. The photo above is in the front of it and I think that helps make this course more personal to him. It has pages for each lesson, some ‘blank’ but for a background image, but most with activities and/or questions.
When we first were chosen for this to review, I thought I might do it much like we had before- read aloud, discussion, notebooking. We decided this time that Fox would do this as an independent study for the most part. In the main book, under the How to Use This Book section {at the front}, it gives an example schedule for lessons. (sorry for the poor quality)
But what we decided to do was to follow the suggested schedule in the notebooking journal. (I’m so sorry for the quality! taken with my phone)
He does this between 3-5 days a week. He doesn’t complain and actually likes this ‘subject’. I don’t make him do all the pages in the notebooking journal but he hasn’t given me a reason to pressure him. He also narrates what he’s read.
Oh, I almost forgot: the MP3 CD. Here is what it looks like when the MP3-CD is used on my computer {don’t mind my clutter, please- and I put the red rings around it to highlight}:
I thought it was quite neat to look like an MP3 player. It has the same button functions that one would be familiar with a physical MP3 player. This can be minimized on the desktop if desired. I used this some but my ds preferred to read from the book on his own.
Bottom-line:
This is a good quality Biblical worldview choice for families. This is not just for homeschoolers either. It can be adapted for the entire family- all ages. The main book is a wonderful hardback book with nice sturdy pages with photos, images, and drawings throughout that are appealing to the eye. But more than that, this book makes you think. It will help parents teach their children to have a Biblical worldview and not focus on what the world thinks is right- it will help them distinguish between the two. It will probably help the parents as well *wink*.

I also think the cost of these are quite reasonable because what will be gained from them is priceless.

Thanks for this review, Blossom. Off to google.
ReplyDeleteI'm encouraged to hear that your son worked through this on his own! We are using ours as a family since there are so many of us and at different ages. My boys didn't mind the coloring book either.
