For some reason sinks- drain pipes perhaps more specifically- just do not like us. Our sink is broken. I’ve tried to fix it but it failed the first time. We are waiting for caulking to dry now before I test it again. While my dh is away visiting family I wanted to get something fixed that he wouldn’t have to worry about at least one thing. It might not turn out that way. Sigh.
Shortly after we moved here, I tried to fix the leaking toilet… Didn’t turn out well. Dh ended up trying to fix it and it still has problems. Of course I don’t think anything I did in particular made it worse, but I still feel bad that my trying to help seemed to just hinder instead. I really hope the sink is fixed…

While the dishes pile up, I’m insistent that the laundry will not pile up. Running low on laundry soap, I decided to get some homemade laundry soap made. I actually had purchased a bar of Fels Naptha* the last time I visited my mom (I think that was in June??) because they weren’t carrying it where I lived. I also bought some homemade soap from Lindercroft’s awhile back for just this purpose. The Fels Naptha* is a bit strong smelling for my liking so I mixed that and the old fashioned soap together.
I melted the grated soap (thankfully, Lee likes to grate
) in a big pot of 6 cups of water on the stove. Then I heated up about 8 cups of water to almost boiling and added 1 cup washing soda* and 1/2 cup borax*. I mixed these until they were fairly dissolved. Then I poured that water in with the melted soap. Because the water was still pretty hot, it didn’t really look much different. But when I added some cold water (I don’t like dealing with it really hot), then it resembled lemon filling in a pastry…yum- oh, wait, no, not yum. As it cooled it lightened.

I actually prefer the Zote* (pink) soap for making laundry soap but it doesn’t quite get the clothes as clean as Fels Naptha*. And actually I am mixing my homemade soap with the leftover all free and clear* that we had been using. I’m thinking dh bought it when he first came over (in June) but I didn’t see it until September when we moved here. It lasted for quite awhile!
I also hung pictures on the wall- finally! Even with photos and pictures on the wall, it’s still looking so bare. {I think my photos are crooked- sigh}

I’m so glad that next week is no school. This has just been a funk week- perhaps the fun weekend made our week so difficult to get through? But I loved the weekend! Whatever the reason we’ve not had the motivation or enthusiasm to get things done. And on that note, here is what was done for school Wednesday and Thursday:

Today is Thursday and usually we link up with others for composer study but I’ve been so not with it that we’ve done none but listen to the classical radio station, WCLV.
Well that’s that and now I have to find out if the sink is fixed…

Great post, Blossom! We use homemade laundry detergent, too, only I make the powder kind. I use Fels Naphtha (grated in my food processor so it's really fine), borax, and washing soda, and then I throw in some OxyClean for good measure. Fels Naphtha smells really strong in bar form, but when mixed with the other ingredients it's not as shocking. Also, the clothes come out of the wash smeeling like clean water, not the soap. So it's okay.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the leaks! I'm impressed you're actually confident enough to work on them yourself. I'd ruin everything if I tried.
How do you like Life of Fred? Miss Priss is going to begin the Fractions book after Christmas.
I make a Big batch of laundry soap it makes 5 gallons. I use the Fels-Naphtha, washing soda and borax but after its all dissolved I add one small bottle of Original Dawn dish soap. I was having trouble getting greasy stains out and the Dawn did the trick!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get all your stuff fixed!! Its been a tough week for us!
I use a 5 gallon bucket. You can buy them with a lid at Walmart or some place like that alot of times. Or ask in the Bakeries if they have any buckets. Their icing comes in 5 gallon buckets and they will sell them with a lid for fairly cheap.
