Just listen to me ramble on… What We Accomplished… Days # 51-55

Say it with me: WOW! It’s October 8th 11th already!

I’m not caught up with the speed that life is going. I’m barely caught up with last week…and I started this post Saturday and it’s the end of Tuesday already. Oi vey!

It was a good week. Fox started Young Marines and I think he likes it. It will be tough for him and it will challenge him but I know he can handle it. I’m quite proud of him and his dad for doing this together. It is going to be ‘their thing’. I will be here to cheer Fox on, of course, but his dad is the one that will be there with him each time; take him and pick him up. It’s 17 weeks of ‘boot camp’. We had to purchase the items he needed the other day such as blue jeans (not black like the ones he has), white tshirts, white socks and the elusive solid black shorts. We finished up buying the rest of his required items (brand new pair of tennis shoes- gasp! he wears 7 1/2 MENS!!) today and also had his physical done.

Other than that… mmm, not much has been going on. We have been doing school each day and we went grocery shopping of sorts the day we went looking for Fox’s clothes.

DH and I went ‘stock-up’ shopping this afternoon. For being new to the area, we were given a free 90 day membership to a place called BJ’s (I’d never heard of it). It is a lot like Costco, Sam’s Club or similar membership store. We found some good deals, I believe. And it isn’t that far from our house.

Ah! I shared the link to Heavenly Homemakers two days ago…that site got me starting a batch of sourdough going Smile …unfortunately, I forgot the first batch for three days. Um, if it has green on top and it smells more spoiled than sour- throw it out! Yeah, you probably knew that. I can’t believe I forgot it! But I tried again Saturday, fresh. The jar is out on the counter so I can see it this time. No forgetting Winking smile I feed it every day.

While it is becoming ‘sour’ (what is it called? culturing? curing? I don’t know!) I decided to purchase a few of the little yeast packets and make some yummy yeast bread. What I found was Red Star Quick Acting Yeast (or something like that); says it rises 50% faster than regular yeast. $.92 for three packs was a good price for me so I got started on that when we got home from running errands. It ended up that I had the dough set to rise the first time and dh told me we were going to the store. Uh… It is a minimum of 30 minutes driving time no matter what we do lately, wherever we have to go. I knew that I wouldn’t be here when the dough needed to be dealt with. I entrusted Lee with the task of kneading it a second time and forming it into loaves. I got home right as the oven was preheating, the loaves ready for cooking. Lee was stressed, I could tell. I’ve never actually shown her how to form loaves...and I’m sure she’s very glad I didn’t get a photo to share with the world heehee Smile

In the end the bread was delicious. Open-mouthed smile Amazing how fast a loaf of warm fresh bread can go…

And that has been the highlights of our days since my last update. Very tired today and I have a book to get read for a review. I hope all have a good night and wonderful Wednesday morning!

Oh! Here’s what’s been done with school…

Language Arts: Excellence in Literature (The White Heron, first approach paper, started The Diamond Necklace [I think we are going slower than the ‘average’ student with this but it’s working well for us that way), NaNoWriMo preparations (using the High School workbook), History of English Literature (chapters 39 & 40)
Foreign Language:  First Form Latin (Lesson 20 worksheets and test) [LOL can we count “Leetasian”? she has created her own language and was working on that last week Winking smile it is influenced greatly by Greek and Latin but with her own creative imagination for the characters]

Science: Biology (chapter 5 test, beginning chapter 6 pages 101-103, vocabulary)

Math: Life of Fred PreAlgebra 2 with Economics (Final Bridge try 3) [finished the book], started Algebra the Easy Way (introduction through page 16 did exercises and end of chapter problems 1-45 odd [I don’t see how it is ‘easy’; it had me stumped a few times- too technical])
History/Geography: Ohio ‘study’ (How to Draw Ohio’s Sights and Symbols- pg 10-11 [‘draw’ the state]), Heritage History Classical Curriculum (reading from a few books [30 minutes a day], time line work and map work), Around the World in 180 Days (Asia- pages 3-11 [finished], 13-14 [maps] and 15 #3, 7, 9 [research, writing])

Foreign Language: First Form Latin (Lesson 20 worksheets and test)
Gov’t/Economics/Civics/Logic: Plutarch (Lycurgus -narrated), Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? (chapter 10), Principles of Marketing [just to see how he would do; wouldn’t suggest this for a middle school age student.]

Penmanship: Pictures in Cursive
Composer Study: Listening to classical music every day (except today) on a local radio station. They give tidbits of information about composers and the piece being performed throughout the broadcast.
