TOS REVIEW: Zoe & Sozo Publishing: Foundlings

No Magic, No Evolution, No Humanism. This book, Foundlings: Book One of the Peleg Chronicles by Matthew Christian Harding, was sent to me to review as a member of the TOS Crew. For ages 10 and older this 256 page book is priced at $11.95 and sure to be enjoyed.

So what did my 11 year old think of this book? At first, I will be honest, he didn't want to read it. I had to pretty much beg him to read it. He is a Star Wars fan...and Garfield.

This book isn't Star Wars...or Garfield...and therefore he did not want to read it, willingly. Why didn't he want to? It wasn't by an author he is familiar with, it isn't about what he is used to, and I was
making him read it.

Alright, fast forward.... He did read the book. In a total of about 5 hours, spread out over two-three days. His final analysis of the book? It is good! He gave it 8.5/10 because he said that parts were too fast paced and there were places that more detail would have been better.

The fact that there is no magic or humanism or evolution is not something that detracted from his reading experience. My daughter however, who is 13 (almost 14), doesn't want to read it because of the "No Magic, No Humanism, No Evolution" claim. Actually, just the No Magic part is the deterrent for her. With her it is like saying, "No, you cannot have the soda," when there is a 12-pack in the fridge. If that makes sense. There are so many books out today that have magic as the main focus that she seems to think that a book won't be good without it. I think that it's like putting sugar on your apple. The apple is already good, no need for the sugar!

If the book is good on it's own it won't need the added, uh, junk to make it better. That's what this book is like. It's a sweet nectarine that doesn't need the table sugar added. Besides table sugar is bad for you ;)

What is the book about? It's about a time when the Dragon Priests, who believe in fake gods and worship dragons, offer sacrifices to their gods. The main characters, who are Christians, fight against the Dragon Priests. Set after the days of the Flood, some characters include Lord McDougal, Thiery, his father Count Rosencross, Fergus, Suzie, Gimcrack, and a wolf cub, Horatio.

Conclusion: Good book!

My son wants me to get the next book- NOW. I think this is definitely a book he will read again.

Also available is the second book in the series, Paladins (which we've not read here), and "Lord willing" the third book will be out by May 2011. They also intend to have lapbooks and study guides available the following year. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the progress since it was a hit with 1 of 2 in my house :) And who knows, the other one may decide to read it after all~
